"The Other" in Jewish Culture: Threat, Opportunity, or Reflection

In recent years, western thought has dealt extensively with the concept of “the other” from a cultural, historical, and moral standpoint. The curriculum examines the meaning of this concept in Jewish culture.

It deals with these issues through classic and modern sources, while studying Talmudic passages and essays by key philosophers in both Jewish and general culture.

  • Is “the other” a threat to us, or does s/he pose an opportunity for understanding and for positive action?
  • Does our attitude towards “the other” reflect our attitude towards ourselves?
  • What are our moral responsibilities to others in society?
  • What is the relationship between the statement that man was created in God’s image and the concept of “the other”?
